What Do I Need To Do To Apply For U.S. Citizenship?

After holding a green card (lawful permanent resident status) for five years or more, many individuals find themselves eligible to apply for United States citizenship through the naturalization process, a significant milestone in their journey toward becoming fully integrated members of American society. For those who are married to a U.S. citizen, the path to citizenship can be even more accessible, as eligibility may be granted after just three years. However, it is important to note that applicants must also meet several additional requirements beyond just their residency duration. These include maintaining continuous residence in the United States, demonstrating good moral character, and possessing basic proficiency in the English language. Furthermore, applicants are required to exhibit a solid understanding of U.S. history as well as the fundamental workings of the U.S. government, ensuring they are well-informed about their rights and responsibilities as future citizens.

Successfully completing the naturalization process not only empowers you with the privilege of voting and other essential rights but also brings about a sense of pride and belonging as you enjoy many of the same rights and responsibilities as those who were born as U.S. citizens. At Valeo Law in Sterling Heights, Michigan, experienced immigration attorney Alberto Delgado is dedicated to helping lawful permanent residents navigate the sometimes complex naturalization requirements and prepare for each and every step of the process with clarity and confidence.

How Do I Start the Process?

During your initial consultation at Valeo Law, immigration attorney Alberto Delgado will review your background to determine whether you meet the requirements to apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization. If you are eligible, he will guide you through gathering the information needed to complete Form N-400, the official application for naturalization.

Alberto Delgado also helps identify and organize any supporting documents required for your application and prepares you for what to expect during the naturalization interview, including reviewing sample questions. Once everything is ready, he assists with completing and submitting your N-400 application to USCIS.

What Will Happen at My Interview?

You will need to bring your green card along with a valid state ID or driver’s license to your naturalization interview to confirm your identity. During the interview, a USCIS officer will review the information you provided on your Form N-400 and ask you to confirm that it remains accurate. If any details have changed since you submitted your application, you will be asked to disclose those changes and provide supporting documentation if necessary.

The interview also includes an English language component, where you will be asked to read a sentence in English and write a dictated sentence. In addition, you will take a civics test consisting of 10 questions about U.S. history and government. Answering at least six questions correctly is required to pass.

While the naturalization interview can feel intimidating, proper preparation can make the process much more manageable. At Valeo Law in Sterling Heights, Michigan, immigration attorney Alberto Delgado helps clients understand what to expect and prepare for each part of the interview, so they can approach the process with confidence.
